Thanks to a Quiksilver initiative, since Friday, November 20th, the Grand Palais has been dedicated to skateboarding and street culture for the Tony Hawk Show.

The world’s greatest skating star Tony Hawk was in Paris for an exceptional show that took place Saturday night underneath the majestic glass roof of the Grand Palais.

This gala evening began with a parade of the biggest stars of boardsports: Kelly Slater, Robby Naish, Travis Rice, Torah Bright, Lisa Andersen, Tom Carroll, Jeremy Flores, and Mathieu Crepel. This was followed by a unique display from Tony Hawk and his guests: Andy Mac Donald, Sandro Dias, Sergie Ventura and Jean Postec on the biggest ramp in Europe.

The night was brought to a close with a live concert by Dead By Sunrise, the newly formed band of Chester Bennington, the voice of Linkin Park and a DJ set by Mix Master Mike, the DJ from the Beastie Boys.

Throughout the history of competitive sports, athletes have made great strides in the pursuit of excellence. This winter Quiksilver Inc.’s roster of world-class athletes will do just that.  In February, fourteen of our top snowboard competitors are slated to take center stage at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, as they quest for the ultimate accomplishment - Olympic gold.

Snowboarding has been an Olympic sport since its introduction to the games at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998.  Olympic snowboard events include the half pipe competition, the giant slalom and the snowboard cross. 

Olympic hopefuls under the Quiksilver umbrella include Lib Tech’s Danny Kass, who is back on the hunt for Olympic gold after winning silver medals for half pipe in the 2002 and 2006 Winter Games, as well as Roxy’s Torah Bright, who took 5th place in the 2006 Winter Games.

Qualifying competitions for the Olympics’ USA contenders are scheduled to take place at Mammoth Mountain, Copper Mountain and at Park City, with the final US Olympic team selections to be announced on January 24th.

In its magnificent setting of the Basque Coast, the European cradle of surfing, the Roxy Jam Biarritz, set to host the ASP Women’s World Longboard Championship for the fourth year running, is one of the biggest events in the surfing calendar. It is also - and especially - an authentic festival, completely free and intended as both a celebration and an introduction to surfing culture and artistic and musical influences. From 10th to 14th July 2009, the Roxy Jam Biarritz will be sharing its summer quarters below the Villa Belza for five days and five nights of surfing, open-air concerts (Santigold, Le Corps Mince de Francoise) and art, with a vast exhibition of photography (by Taki Bibelas, Jeff Hornbaker, Sylvain Cazenave, Lorene Carpentier, and others). The whole event is a wave of fun and freshness that attracts over 50,000 summer visitors ever year…

The world’s elite are due in Biarritz for ASP women’s world longboard Championships.

A total of 32 professional women surfers, all nose riding virtuosos from the four corners of the planet, will come to the Basque Coast to compete for the title of ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion 2009. With Schuyler McFerran taking the trophy in 2006, followed by her compatriot Jennifer Smith in 2007 and the surprise victory of Hawaii’s Joy Monahan last year, the event has been dominated by the United States… despite increasingly tough competition from Australia, Europe and Asia. Will 2009 be the year surfing’s other great nations strike back? The consistent progress of surfers from France (Justine Dupont, Coline Menard, Claire Karabatsos), Spain (Estitxu Estremo), and the UK (Candice O’Donnell) means Europe has a real chance of bringing the title back home to Europe. The Australian contingent, led by Chelsea Williams (2nd place in 2008) will be formidable opponents. Yet the biggest challengers for Joy Monahan’s title will most likely be her fellow Americans: Jen Smith harbors dreams of winning the championship back, whilst Kassia Meador and Leah Dawson will be fighting hard for a maiden victory, as will the Hawaiians Kelia Moniz and Crystal Dzigas…

In short, the competition is set to be incredibly tough.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz has a new, more compact and competitive format. With a contingent of 32 girls instead of 48 last year, the line-up for Biarritz will represent the cream of women’s world long boarding. The Top 16 girls from the 208 Worlds will be seeded. The remaining 16 competitors will be selected in regions where no ASP Tour events are held this year. Like the ASP World Tour for the short board, the Roxy Jam Biarritz 2009 will not include a repechage round. If they are defeated in the first round, the competitors will be directly eliminated. In other words, the competition will be merciless and the competitors will be forced to produce their best surfing from start to finish, or risk being knocked out early on. There’s no safety net.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz art exhibition can be found at the centre of the festival site, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It is the beating creative heart of the event, a cultural hub looking outward to the world, bringing together artists inspired by sea, surf…and women. After hosting and presenting all kinds of works by international artists (sculptures, paintings, moldings, graffiti…), this year ROXY ART is taking a new heading and dedicating its 2009 edition to photography. Intimately bound to surfing culture and particularly to Roxy, which maintains very close links with graphic art, photography is without doubt the most accessible and universal form of artistic expression. It is also the most prolific.

Throughout the Roxy Jam, Roxy Art will be displaying works by big names who have captured the most beautiful waves, underwater shots by photographic magicians, portraits of charismatic personalities or anonymous faces from the world of surfing, as well as stories telling of the beauty and fragility of our element: water…among others. All the images on display will be available for purchase, with 50% of the profits donated to the Quiksilver Foundation. Alongside this exhibition, fun artistic workshops will give adults and children alike the chance to familiarize themselves with photography and make their own contribution to the exhibition.

Since its foundation, the Roxy Jam has been faultless in its musical programming. The key to the event, the music is carefully and eclectically selected so that, each summer, there is an attractive set of young groups and female artists of international renown, with free live shows. After Neneh Cherry, Cibelle, The Organ in 2006; CSS, Pravda, DJ Chloe in 2007; The Do, Operator Please, this year’s Roxy Jam will feature the prodigious priestess of pop, Santi White, better known by her stage name: ?Santigold? and ?Le Corps mince de Francoise? are the other special guests at the 2009 edition. One thing is sure, the magic of open-air concerts on the Port Vieux beach, with sand between your toes, will rock again this summer.

Shot primarily in Beijing’s Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park, the movie is the sequel to last year’s snowboarding flick “Niu Beesness”. Luckily for the public we were forced to abandon our initial plan of venturing into the erotic films industry due to legal issues…and decided to put together Happy Niu Year instead.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.) – Fred Patacchia (North Shore, HI), 27, won mainland America’s first Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME, the 6.0 Lowers Pro, when he defeated defending event champion Ben Bourgeois (Wrightsville Beach, NC), 30, by a score of 16.84 to 14.10 in two-to-four foot surf at the famed cobblestone reef of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. Today’s action also saw defending ASP World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HI), 19, claim the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge U.S.A. Qualifier, which ran in conjunction with the 6.0 Lowers Pro.

This season Quiksilver has brought together the efforts of European designers Karen Sholz (Berlin) and Joan Tarrago (Barcelona) to produce the vibe and apparel of the Quiksilver Voodoo Collection. The combination of fashion design and art is best represented in the backgrounds of the two designers: Karen coming from fashion design and Joan from street art/graffiti roots. The experience of both designers grounded the Quiksilver Voodoo Collection in creativity. Karen and Joan started working together in 2006 when they started to make noise in the fashion/design scene. The quality of their design work became known internationally when they claimed not only a European Fashion Award in 2007 from the German Apparel Industry Foundation, but in 2008 the duo also won a prestigious Apolda European Design Award. Beyond raining in praise from judges and critics, Joan and Karen also caught the eye of hi fashion designer John Galliano, who invited the two designers to his studio in Paris to work their designs using high quality silk fabrics.

The Quiksilver Voodoo Collection derives its creative inspiration from the combination of ancient Polynesian voodoo gods and surf culture. The main identification element is the ID mask badge, or “Masko”, which symbolizes different components of surf culture. Created as a ritual surf-mask, the sign shows the union between the roots and modern mood for boardriding. Another voodoo element is the “Deejung” image in the form of a Polynesian totem. Both “Masko” and “Deejung” are presented in various ways on t-shirts, hoodies, chino-styled pants, walk shorts, and bags.

The creative efforts of Karen Sholz and Joan Tarrago can be seen in every angle of the Quiksilver Voodoo Collection. The cut of the water resistant jacket and hoody pieces is at once fashionable, and also urban with all over prints and inner-lining graphics. The soft cotton t-shirts in bright colors and soft hues of blue and yellow are as well reminiscent of the beach, but an urbanely-based beach. Joan’s urban graffiti style can be seen in the way “Masko” and “Deejung” are graphically presented on each piece of the Quiksilver Voodoo Collection. Veering away from the mainstream, the Quiksilver Voodoo Collection is a strange collaboration of ancient voodoo and surf culture, where both styles meet in an urban environment. The collection is made for boardriding addicts, who want to bring the “get a board” message from the beach to the streets.

Though the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro events have come to a close, the ASP World Tour has just begun. The Quiksilver surf team, including World Champion Kelly Slater, young gun Julian Wilson and ASP Rookie of the year Dane Reynolds will be heading on to Tahiti, Fiji and South Africa through the Spring season, and in December the final ASP World Tour event will take place in Hawaii. Surfing fans around the world will be on the edge of their seats as they watch 35 year old Kelly Salter attempt to claim an unprecedented 10th World Title.

TORAH BRIGHT - 2008 X-Games Superpipe Gold Medalist Dominates the Pipe at the Last Stop of the Dew Tour

Huntington Beach, Calif. victorious snowboarding season, Torah Bright takes home the gold in the final stop of the Alliance of Action Sports (ALLI) Dew Tour Toyota Championship. Torah’ssecond Superpipe run was the best run of the day, earning her an event-high score of 95.5, and beating out Olympians Kelly Clark and Hannah Teter. It was Torah’s innovative run, consisting of a flawless air to fakie, a Cab 720, Crippler, backside 360, and switch backside 720, that secured her the top spot.

This gold medal is not the first for Torah this season. Torah took home the X-Games gold medal last month while breaking the record for the highest Superpipe score for women in Winter X. Torah will now set her sights on placing first at the Roxy Chicken Jam in March before gearing up for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Toyota Championship win was a great addition to Torah’s strong 2008/2009
season. Although the persistent rain threatened the day, Torah remained upbeat, “I still managed to land the run I had planned, so I couldn’t be
happier.“

Quiksilver’s Xfox wins the Pirate Nightrail Session in an absolutely EPIC night!

As the rail-ninjas of China converged on the Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park on the last day of February for the Pirate Nightrail Session, one thing was for sure – these local riders can shred. With the weather warming up, Spring has definitely arrived in Beijing, but thanks to lower temperatures after the sun sinks beneath the horizon, the park’s snow and setup couldn’t have been in better condition for Saturday Night’s session.

The Nightrail Session has an infamous reputation amongst China’s snowboard community. In it’s fourth year now, not only is the event one of the few opportunities local riders get to shred during the night-time, but it is also associated with one of the year’s ‘rowdier’ after-parties – but we will save that story for another time. The night is also one of the best snowboard spectator events in the country – a cranking soundtrack provided by DJ Steve, and free beer for the crowd. No, you didn’t read that wrong – free beer for the crowd!

Saturday’s Pirate Nightrail Session was no different from the others – an absolutely epic shred session on yet another creative park setup from the Mellow Parks crew. This year the crew introduced a 9m down rail, a double picnic table setup, and a long high-mount black propane tank – with a nickname I can’t post here – along with a snow bank combo that allows for an almost unlimited number of different combos. You could tell the guys were enjoying the new setup, as the tricks got more and more technical and creative.

Taking away top honors this year was Quiksilver rider Xfox, pulling impressive moves on almost all the features. His trick of the day, however, was his you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it BS180 switch 50-50, BS180 off on the downrail – so steezy! On the individual objects, local hero and Burton rider Wanglei took best trick on the downrail, with a super smooth BS lipslide, as well as ripping it up on the other objects. Huwei was a definite crowd pleaser, winning the wallride with a sweet 540. Quiksilver rider Zhangwei totally owned the picnic tables and also threw a huge FS270 on, 270 off on the big black barrel to win that particular feature. The twin picnic tables were also showing some of the more impressive tricks. Huntington Beach, CA - January 26, 2009 — Roxy is pleased to congratulate snow team riders, Sarah Burke and Torah Bright, on their amazing performance in Aspen this weekend, striking gold in the SuperPipe at Winter X Games XIII. Freeskier Sarah Burke took her third consecutive X Games gold medal in the Women’s Ski SuperPipe while snowboarder Torah Bright, reclaimed gold, after winning the Women’s Snowboard SuperPipe in 2007 and finishing with a silver in 2008. Roxy team rider Kjersti Buaas placed fourth in the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle and Jess Cumming, who rides for Roxy Skis, took home the bronze medal for her performance in the SuperPipe.

Earlier in the games during the elimination round, Torah set a Winter X Games record for the highest SuperPipe score for women with a 97.33 out of a 100, second only to Olympic gold medalist Shaun White who holds the record for men with 97.34. Known for being one of the most technical and progressive female snowboards ever, Torah prevailed over the competition in the finals looking stylish as ever in her Gold Signature RoxyBrightEdition jacket with a Backside 360, Switch Backside 7, McTwist, Air to Fakie, Switch Frontside 7. Olympic gold medalists Kelly Clark and Hannah Teter finished second and third respectively.

Sarah proved once again she is the top freeskier in the SuperPipe. Sitting in the second spot going into her third and final run, Sarah came from behind as the last and final skier of the night with a Cork 900 safety grab, straight air, 540 mute grab, right 540 safety, cork 7 tail. The judges awarded her a 93.33 out of 100, just enough to beat out Jen Hudak’s 92.66. Jess Cumming finished third for a bronze medal, making it Jess’ first appearance on the podium at the Winter X Games.

In addition this year’s Winter X Games, saw many exciting changes with Women’s Freeskiing Slopestyle making its grand debut, along with equal pay for both the men’s and women’s events. Over the past six years Roxy’s Sarah Burke has been instrumental in pushing for the addition of Women’s Freesking Slopestyle and equal pay through her lobbying efforts and continual involvement with the governing bodies for X Games and skiing.

Freddy Austbo Takes Home Top Honors at China’s 7th Red Bull Nanshan Open

Beijing, CHINA – January 11th, 2008 – As the 12 qualifiers from the previous day’s competition took to the Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park for day two of the 7th Red Bull Nanshan Open, feelings were mixed as the wind that plagued last year’s event threatened to dampen yet another Nanshan Open. However with this year’s improved setup and some solid tucking down the in-run by the riders, enough speed was gained in practice to be able to utilize the smaller of the two kicker lines and the competition was on!
Today saw an even larger crowd than yesterday cheering the riders, and proved just how popular this sport is finally becoming in China! With yesterday’s field of 24 riders narrowed down to just 12 for the best-of-two-runs Finals, the pressure was definitely on to throw down on the competition’s last day.
After the morning session, some radical riding and some heavy deliberation from the judges, the results really were too close to call. Markus Keller and Tyler Chorlton ended up in a dead tie for 4th place, and thus 5 riders would advance through to the Super Finals. Markus and Tyler joined Atsushi Ishikawa, Freddy Austbo and Kalle Ohlson for the afternoon’s showdown.
An obvious crowd favourite at the 6th Red Bull Nanshan Open, Freddy Austbo unfortunately failed to place highly in last year’s event, unable to gain enough speed against the wind. This year, however, things would be different, and as the winds increased in the afternoon Freddy morphed into the ultimate aerodynamic machine, becoming one of the few competitors to comfortable clear both kickers. “I’m so stoked. This year I didn’t use Kalle’s wax and bought my own instead, so I was actually able to get some speed! I can’t wait to celebrate at karaoke tonight…” Freddy took home first place and 500 TTR points with a winning run consisting of a BS540 off the first hit, a Cab540 off the second, a BS180 up on to the wave box and a Cab540 off. Freddy finished his run with a rock-and-roll to fakie on the wallride and will definitely be rock-and-rolling the mic tonight!
Returning for his third year at this event, Atsushi Ishikawa grabbed 471.15 TTR points with a close second place, ranking one place higher than at last year’s Open and only just missing out on a perfect run. “I wanted to get first.. but I will come back and try again next year!” We hope to finally see Atsushi in the center of the podium then!
Kalle Ohlson should speak better Chinese by now. This is his fourth year in a row to this event, and he is another competitor to place well here in the past with a second place at the 5th Red Bull Nanshan Open. Kalle rode solidly all weekend, going huge over the kickers and stomping almost all of his tricks, however losing speed after a huge BS720 at the start of his Super Finals run meant he struggled to complete the rest of the course. Kalle ended the competition in a respectable third place, gaining himself 450 TTR points. Haibucuo Kalle!
Honourable mentions of the weekend would have to be possibly the first double-flips ever thrown on Chinese soil – Tyler Chorlton had the crowd gasping with his amazing signature-move double-front flips, and Anton Gunnarsson joined the club with an absolutely huge double-back flip! Another big-ups goes out to the Chinese riders, with Wanglei placing highest throwing down some super sick BS and FS 720 combos over the kicker lines, and Zhangwei, Lijie (Jay) and Xfox all stepped up with 360 variations over the big kicker. Look out for these guys next year!
